Community.  A commitment to serving our community–that’s what we have here at Oologah United Methodist Church!

Our growth groups for adults, youth, and school aged-children all have built-in service components.  It’s because we believe that DOING something about our faith is just as important as what we BELIEVE about our faith.  It’s really hard to have one without the other.

Beyond the frequent times you’ll see members of our growth groups out in the community serving in various capacities, we have at least a few large scale, community-wide events through which we try and bring hundreds of people together to make our community a better place in which to live.  First, is our “OPERATION THANKSGIVING.”  We began this annual mission effort in November of 2008.  In November 2009, we are proud to say that our efforts grew to the point of where we were able to deliver over 175 turkeys and complete Thanksgiving meals to the doorsteps of families in need in our immediate area. This mission has grown to be a local area multi church effort that feeds 300+ families Thankgiving dinners!

In addition, we offer ongoing ministries of a food pantry and our school-year driven “Food4Kids” backpack program.  The food pantry is housed on site at the church and is available any Mondays from 10a – 2p for those who need some groceries to get through a difficult time.  All that is necessary that those needing food fill out a very simple, one-page application which insures that we can continue to strive towards becoming a certified distributor of food via the Eastern Oklahoma Regional Food Bank.

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) serves about 595,000 low‐income people each month, and is
the only USDA nutrition program that provides monthly food assistance specially targeted at low‐income seniors.
The program is designed to meet the unique nutritional needs of participants, supplementing diets with a monthly
package of healthy, nutritious USDA commodities. With one in 12 households with seniors at risk of hunger
nationwide,ii CSFP prevents vulnerable seniors from having to choose between food and other basic needs.

Our Food4Kids backpack program sees to it that about 70 of our elementary students locally receive backpacks each Friday filled with nutritious snacks to last them over each weekend.

You need not be a member of Oologah UMC if you either need the help of one of these ministries or would like to just come alongside us, roll up your sleeves and start making a difference!
